In this
tutorial I'll show you how to construct a front hinged glass door,
top vent, and a water tight bottom area for substrate or false bottom.
Time - 2 to 3 hours construction
4 to 5 days until water tight
Difficulty - Moderate
Supplies:
- Plastic fusion epoxy, 4000lb+ strength
- Build your own screen kit and 8 extra
corners
(12 corners total)
+ Screen kit comes
with spine, 4 metal
frame pieces
and 4 plastic corners
+ I used a total
of 150 inches of metal
frame for the 40gal.
tank pictured
- Small piece of screen for the top vent
+ I use the black
non-metal type
- 2-3 Hinges
- 2-3 Cabinet magnet latches (preferred)
+ or any locking
clasps for the door
- Aquarium silicon (If you want the bottom
water tight)
- Black regular silicon (I use GE Silicon II)
- 2, 1/4 inch pieces of glass cut perfectly
for your sized tank
-
40 gal = 17" x 6" and 16 1/4" x 22"
Tools:
- Hacksaw
- Caulking gun
- Clamps
Start with a clean tank
First,
silicon in the bottom smaller piece of glass (with aquarium silicon
if you're going to hold water) to hold in the substrate or false
bottom. Then use the screen kit to make a false frame for the bottom
of the tank just for looks. Use the hacksaw to cut the metal screen
framing and don't forget to add room for the corners. Cut this rectangle
so it fits perfectly inside the cage lip but about 3/16" from
the top of the bottom glass piece you just siliconed into place,
this will make a lip for the door to rest on.

Then
your going to build the door by using the hacksaw again to cut the
screen frame just bigger than the larger piece of glass that you
bought for the door. Make sure the screen frame sits nicely inside
the rim of the cage but doesn't fall in and is the perfect size.
Silicon the glass onto the frame with regular black silicon and
let dry.

Once
dry you can epoxy on a handle for the door's front and double check
the fit of the door by placing it back on the cage and making sure
it sits in the rim of the cage perfectly. Then epoxy the cabinet
magnets onto the door and inside the cage frame respectively. You'll
have to cut notches in the plastic frame of the cage for the latches
to work (see pics).
Make sure the magnets line up perfectly so that they latch tight.
Next
you'll make the vent for the top by simply following the build-your-own-screen
directions and making the screen fit perfectly into the remaining
top portion of the cage. Use a piece of the screen frame siliconed
along the bottom of this top vent to make a lip for the door as
seen in the pictures. Once fit correctly and verified you can silicon
it into place with regular black silicon.
Lastly when everything looks
good epoxy on the hinges to the door and your all set.
Wait
a full day to let the epoxy set before testing it out. A full week
for the silicon before adding animals or water.
Enjoy!
Options: You can also make the
door completely screen instead of glass but it isn't as good for
viewing.
- You can also make the bottom glass piece
and door as large or small as you want depending on your individual
needs.
Tips: Don't get the door frame
too snug or it will be tough to open the door
Always triple
check measurements before cutting.
Spray paint the hinges and frames to get
a professional look
